There is something so special about ending a long day with a warm bath.
As moms, wives, business owners, homeschoolers, caregivers (or honestly, just humans trying to survive life 😅), we spend so much time taking care of everyone else that we often forget to take care of ourselves.
And no, self-care doesn’t have to mean an expensive spa day.
Sometimes it’s as simple as locking the bathroom door, running a hot bath, and soaking in peace for twenty minutes while nobody asks where their socks are.
One of my favourite ways to make bath time feel extra special is with homemade bath salts. They’re incredibly easy to make, completely natural, and your bathroom will smell amazing.
The best part? You probably already have most of the ingredients at home.
Why I Love Homemade Bath Salts
Store-bought bath products can be filled with artificial fragrances and ingredients you can’t even pronounce. Making your own means you know exactly what’s going into them.
Plus, you can customise them depending on what you need.
Need to relax? Add lavender.
Feeling tired and sluggish? Try lemon and eucalyptus.
Need a little pampering? Throw in some rose petals and make it pretty.
It’s simple, affordable, and honestly, making them is almost as relaxing as using them.
The Recipe: Your Essential, Easy Homemade Bath Salts
Making your own custom bath salts is incredibly straightforward. This flexible base recipe can be easily customized to your preferred scent, skin type, and needs. This recipe is designed for a large, sharing-sized 2-cup jar (which, incidentally, makes a perfect gift!).
The Ingredients
To get started, you will need:
- 1 Cup Epsom Salt: Famous for its ability to soothe muscle aches and soften skin.
- 1/2 Cup Sea Salt: Rich in trace minerals that cleanse and detoxify the skin.
- 1/2 Cup Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate): An effective water softener that can balance skin pH and relieve minor irritation.
- 10-15 Drops Essential Oil: This is your primary aroma. Lavender and vanilla create immediate relaxation; eucalyptus and lemon are wonderful for a morning boost.
- 1 Tbsp (Optional) Dried Botanicals: Dried lavender sprigs, rose petals, dried orange peel, or rosemary leaves can be folded in gently for an exquisite visual treat.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare a Large Bowl: Start with a large, clean mixing bowl. Add your 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1/2 cup of sea salt. Use a spoon or whisk to combine them thoroughly, ensuring even distribution.
- Add the Baking Soda: Integrate your 1/2 cup of baking soda into the salt mixture. Continue stirring until you have a smooth, well-mixed dry base.
- Incorporate the Scents: Slowly add your 10-15 drops of essential oil (or your custom blend!). The key here is to stir carefully and consistently, ensuring the oil is dispersed evenly and not clumping in one spot.
- Final Flourishes (Optional): If you are using dried flowers or herbs, fold them in gently now with a spatula.
- Storage: Transfer your finished bath salts into a clean, airtight container. Glass mason jars or corked apothecary bottles are ideal. Don’t forget a label! Your homemade bath salts will keep their aroma beautifully for approximately six months.

Why Use Bath Salts?
Besides smelling incredible, bath salts may offer several benefits.
Many people love using Epsom salt baths after exercise or long days on their feet because they can help soothe tired, achy muscles.
A warm bath itself can help you unwind, lower stress levels, and prepare your body for restful sleep.
Adding calming essential oils like lavender or chamomile can make the experience even more relaxing.
Personally, I find that simply taking twenty quiet minutes for myself does wonders for my stress levels.
Sometimes the bath isn’t just for the body. It’s for the soul too.
More Ways to Use Your Bath Salts
You don’t need a full bathtub to enjoy them.
Try a relaxing foot soak
After a busy day, add a handful of bath salts to a basin of warm water and soak your feet. Bliss!
Make a body scrub
Mix bath salts with a little coconut oil or olive oil to create a simple natural exfoliating scrub.
Your skin will feel incredibly soft afterwards.
Homemade Bath Salts Make Beautiful Gifts
I absolutely love giving homemade gifts.
Fill a pretty glass jar with your bath salts, tie a ribbon around it, and you’ve got a thoughtful gift that almost everyone appreciates.
You could even create little spa gift baskets by adding:
- A candle
- Herbal tea
- A natural soap
- A face mask
- A handwritten note
Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones made with love.
